Anesthesia residents rotate at three hospitals all within the greater Philadelphia area: Hahnemann University Hospital, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, and Abington Memorial Hospital. Each institution offers different clinical experiences to the resident.

Hahnemann University Hospital

Established in 1885, Hahnemann University Hospital (HUH) is the main teaching institution for the residency. With over 550 beds, HUH is a major tertiary referral center. 14,000 anesthetics and over 2,500 deliveries each year provide excellent clinical exposure.

A wide variety of clinical rotations and subspecialty management include, but are not limited to:

  • Ambulatory surgery
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Thoracic surgery
  • Trauma surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Urologic surgery
  • Vascular surgery
  • Otorhinolaryngologic surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Obstetric surgery

  • Pain rotation
  • SICU

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children

Established in 1875, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children (SCH) is a 178-bed institution that provides pediatric anesthesiology training. Over 4,000 anesthetics are performed annually at this Level-I trauma and regional referral center. The anesthesiologists at SCH have expertise is both pediatric anesthesia and pediatric intensive care. Residents benefit from exposure to children with chronic medical conditions and to children for routine procedures. Residents receive significant exposure to critically ill neonates, as well as children with congenital heart disease, burns, renal failure, heart failure, hepatic failure, and upper airway obstruction. 


Abington Memorial Hospital

For more than 90 years Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) has provided health care to the community. AMH is a 570-bed level-II trauma center with over 34,000 inpatient admissions and over 5,000 deliveries annually. AMH is a major medical center serving as a referral center for neurosurgical, cardiac, cancer, and orthopedic surgeries. Anesthesiology residents rotate at AMH during CA-II and CA-III years with a primary focus on neurosurgical, cardiac, and major vascular anesthesia.
