Overview of the Residency Program
The residency training program in anesthesiology at Drexel University College of Medicine began in one of the College’s founding institutions, Hahnemann Medical College. The primary teaching hospital remains at the same location in center city Philadelphia where the residency training program began in 1929.
Henry Swartley Ruth, M.D., learned the administration of anesthetics following his graduation from Hahnemann Medical College in 1923. He founded the residency program in 1929, and became the leader of the Department of Anesthesiology at Hahnemann Medical College in 1942. In 1940, Dr. Ruth led a group of like-minded anesthesia physicians in founding Anesthesiology, now the premier scientific journal of our specialty world-wide. Dr. Ruth served as its first Editor-in-Chief. The world’s first surgical heart valve repair at Hahnemann Hospital in 1948 featured anesthesiologist Ken Keown, M.D. as part of the surgical team.
Graduates of the Hahnemann/Drexel anesthesiology training program now populate nearly every hospital in the surrounding Delaware Valley. Their intense exposure during training to a multitude of high-acuity patients provides a well-deserved self-confidence in their ability to administer high-quality anesthesia care to any patient, for any procedure.
Residency training in anesthesiology occurs at four teaching hospitals: Hahnemann University Hospital, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children; Graduate Hospital, and St. Louis University Hospital.
The DrexelMed approach to anesthesia residency training couples personalized, graded exposure to clinical challenges with a rich, diverse didactic program. Resident work schedules allow ample time for individual study, personal pursuits, and relaxation. The department places its highest emphasis on mutual respect of all its members, and on excellence in education and patient care. We invite you to consider joining our team and stand ready to provide any additional information or help to you for that purpose.
