Dear Applicant,
The resident education program at Drexel University College of Medicine DUCOM, has a long tradition in educating competent clinicians to take care of women in their obstetrical, gynecological, and primary care needs. The current program represents an evolution of two historic training programs in OBGYN; MCP, the Medical College of Pennsylvania which was originally the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania which was the first medical school in the United States to train women to take of women, and Hahnemann University, which was the first medical school to promote a complimentary medicine approach called homeopathy. Today the DUCOM program is strong in its mission of education and patient care, and it is fully accredited by the RRC in OBGYN.
The program is a four year comprehensive training experience which capitalizes on the best attributes offered from an academic institution, but is heavily clinical in the provision of care to not only the community around the hospitals, but also to a middle to upper middle class population from the surrounding areas, as well as an international clientele seeking specialty services in such areas as maternal fetal medicine and prenatal diagnosis.
As a Program Director with over 15 year’s experience, I recognize the importance of recruiting not only qualified, but also committed individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, and talents. The department at Drexel University College of Medicine is very interested in promoting and maintaining the diversity of its applicants to enhance the educational experience for all those involved in our program.
As an academic program, we recognize the importance of research and are dedicated to making research a part of the program. We emphasize the importance of critical appraisal of current literature and research findings in all of our clinical endeavors as well as in didactic session including an in-depth Journal Club. All senior residents must present a research project of peer review quality during their senior year at the department resident research day as well as to the regional Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia and the Drexel University Research Day.
As a clinical program with ties to many communities, we recognize the importance of providing a wide breadth of clinical experience in all areas of women’s health care including, obstetrics, gynecology, maternal fetal medicine (MFM), reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI), gynecologic oncology (GONC), emergency medicine, surgical intensive care, primary and ambulatory care, specialty care for women with HIV, reproductive management services for women including all options, and neonatal care.
As a part of a community, we recognize the importance of “giving back” and have structured the program to have residents deeply involved in medical student education and participation in department activities.
Residents are evaluated in a manner that emphasizes their abilities and competence in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, practiced based learning and improvement, interpersonal skills and communication, professionalism, and systems based practice. We are very proud of our graduates and their academic as well as clinical achievement after completing our program. DUCOM graduates are respected and desired by not only local employment opportunities, but also national academic and practice opportunities.
Finally, we are extremely proud of our new affiliation with Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Jersey. They have an exciting new community Ob/Gyn program which you may want to consider in your search for residency. Click here for their web site.
I would be happy to speak with any candidate with questions regarding our educational programs.
Sincerely, Mark B. Woodland, MS MD, FACOG Program Director and Clinical Associate Professor Associate Dean of GME |
