Overview of the Residency Program
We are pleased to present the Drexel University College of Medicine Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The passage of the millennium marked a new century for this institution highlighted by the completion of the merger of what was known as MCP Hahnemann University with Drexel University in July 2002. We are fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee in OBGYN.
Drexel University College of Medicine represents a merger of two strong Philadelphia institutions with rich histories and traditions in medical education. The Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP) was originally the Female Medical College and originated in the mid 1800’s. It became known as the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and later evolved into MCP. MCP was one of this country’s first institutions to educate women in the field of medicine and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2000. Hahnemann University, originally the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania, was the first national medical institution to promote the concept of homeopathy. It was later named for Samuel Hahnemann who is recognized as one of the physician founders of homeopathy practice in the United States.
Capitalizing on this history, the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University merged into one institution in 1993 under the Allegheny Health Education Research Fund (AHERF). The Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the two schools combined shortly after the merger and the unified department combined their residencies into one program The merged program was implemented in 1996 and moved to the City Avenue Hospital site.
In November of 1998 after AHERF’s financial demise, Tenet Health System and Drexel University became partners in managing what was then known as MCP Hahnemann University Medical School. The department and the primary clinical site for the program moved to Hahnemann University Hospital on November 1, 1999.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud of its residency education program. Throughout the transitions outlined above, the core mission of the department has been to support the educational programs of the department. Our department has moved forward through critical appraisal, restructuring, staff retention and recruitment, strategic planning, program development, curriculum changes, and the development of the new facilities. |
