The Department Location
The Department of Ophthalmology is located at 219 N. Broad Street, 3rd Floor, which is across from Hahnemann Hospital. This area is fully equipped to handle all outpatient activities and brief outpatient surgical procedures. Ophthalmic lasers, ultrasound equipment, HRT, OCT, automated perimetry and ophthalmic photography are also available.
Departmental Strengths
Compact Size
Most activities occur in one physical setting, encouraging communication and enhancing departmental unity. Individualized instruction is emphasized and the opportunity for individual growth is encouraged.
Emphasis on Resident Education
No clinical fellowships are offered and none are planned. All educational opportunities are available to the residents.
Resident Input into Departmental Policies
The residents have significant input into the structure and function of the Department’s teaching efforts, and this precedent will continue.
Facilities
Hahnemann Hospital is one of the principal teaching hospitals for Drexel University College of Medicine. Other hospitals in the system include St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, MCP Hospital and Graduate Hospital.
Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center
Located 100 miles north of Philadelphia in a scenic recreation area, the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center provides excellent opportunities for teaching and patient care. Each second and third-year resident obtains didactic and practical experience during the four-month rotation in a setting that encourages graded and supervised decision-making.
