The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Educational Policy Committee Admissions Subcommittee advise the program director regarding resident appointments. The committee consists of at least four members of the faculty, the chair of the department, the chief resident and one other resident elected by the child and adolescent psychiatry residents.
The Admissions subcommittee’s responsibilities are:
1. Ensure faculty and resident involvement in all levels of the admissions process.
2. Create policies and procedures for reviewing applications to the training program,
3. Establish criteria for inviting applicants for interviews.
4. Recommend a rank order for the NRMP subspecialty match and prioritize non-match offers.
An individual inquiry initiates the application process. If the individual meets the basic ACGME criteria for entering a child and adolescent psychiatry residency program, we send each individual the following: the Universal Application Form, letter inviting the application, a brief program overview, a sample employment agreement, a copy of current house staff salary, and an overview of house staff benefits, Tenet educational stipend policy, and visa fact sheet.
Once the individual completes their application, the program coordinator and program director review completed applications for inconsistencies or missing data before offering an interview. The following checklist assures applicant credentials, past performance and professional integrity. Items evaluated include: Universal Residency Application Curriculum Vita, personal statement, medical licenses, visa, certificates, USMLE scores, medical school diploma, ECFMG certificate (if applicable), ABPN certificate (if applicable), psychiatry residency program director letter of recommendation as well as a letter certifying the date of anticipated completion of the first three years of general psychiatry training and competencies achieved, two letters of recommendation.
The program director invites appropriately competent applicants to spend a day meeting with faculty, residents, and attending some of the teaching activities of the division. We provide all applicants interviewed with: a written program description including clinical and didactic block diagrams, financial compensation and policies regarding vacations and leaves (e.g., sickness, disability, maternity/paternity), liability, medical, and disability coverage, including any important exceptions to coverage, resident retreat executive summary, affiliates annual reports.
Generally, at least two faculty and one resident interviews the applicant before the program director. Interviewers complete and return the Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program Applicant Evaluation to the program director. This evaluation assesses many areas relevant to child and adolescent psychiatry including the individual’s language skills and cultural knowledge.
We then collate the interview results on the Applicant Summary Sheet. One section summarizes the applicant’s credentials and past performance; another, the interviewer’s evaluations; and another applicant’s professional integrity based on the letters of recommendation for the Educational Policy Committee Admissions Subcommittee meeting. After reviewing each application, the subcommittee then creates a rank order list. The program director then submits the rank order list to the CAP subspecialty NRMP Match. The GME Office, on behalf of the Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program sends a formal employment offer to matched individuals. |
