Overview of the Residency Program

Drexel University College of Medicine’s residency programs are offered at a variety of urban and suburban hospital facilities throughout the Philadelphia region, providing residents with a wide range of experiences and diversity of resources.

Philosophy of Training

The Drexel University College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry has developed a well-supervised clinical training program providing experience on in-patient, out-patient, consultation-liaison, child-adolescent, emergency psychiatry and substance abuse rotations in addition to medicine and neurology. This program is supported by specific didactic and clinical sequences in psychopathology, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology. Residents are encouraged to participate in the many nationally renowned research programs in the department.

The training program is based on the following principles:

1) Psychiatry residents should develop a strong foundation in the medical model including having the ability to diagnose and treat the broad range of psychiatric disorders, to appreciate the interaction between medical illness and psychiatric dysfunction, and to develop the ability to interpret research and clinical information.

2) Psychiatry residents should become competent in utilizing a range of treatment modalities and their appropriate application, including both psychotherapeutic (psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, supportive group and family therapies) and psychopharmacological therapies.

3) Psychiatry residents should be encouraged to pursue their own developing professional goals whether in the practice of general psychiatry or in a specialized area. The department has the ability to support those residents with a strong interest in developing academic and research careers in psychiatry.

4) Psychiatry residents should be adept in utilizing a continuum of care and able to provide excellent psychiatric services in a managed care environment.

5) Psychiatry residents should be trained in an environment which fosters critical thinking, ethical behavior, and leadership skills.

Graduates of our psychiatry residency program have been successful in establishing careers in private practice, public sector psychiatry, and in academic and research positions.
