- ABINGTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) is 508-bed community teaching hospital located in Abington, Pennsylvania. The Department of Surgery first sent residents to AMH during the second half of the 2003-2004 academic year. This rotation provides residents with an opportunity to rotate on services that are unavailable to them at Hahnemann Hospital. Abington’s surgical faculty were pleased with the level of competence exhibited by our mid-level residents and the decision was made to continue the affiliation. This academic year, the Department of Surgery has PGY-1s and PGY-2s rotating at Abington. Rotations are four weeks in length. Residents at all levels will take part in inpatient, outpatient and office procedures and attend conferences. With experience-appropriate supervision, junior- and senior-level residents participate in surgical procedures, including:
- Plastic and reconstructive surgeries
- Neurosurgery
- Endocrine Surgeries
- Orthopaedic Surgeries
- Urologic Surgeries
Residents further develop a sound and comprehensive fund of knowledge by participating in prescribed and voluntary seminars, including:
- Formal teaching rounds
- Supervised operative procedures
- Clinical conferences
The Department of Surgery’s affiliation with Abington Memorial Hospital continues to be a productive and mutually beneficial endeavor. Abington has recently advised our residency office of their desire to have their residents rotate through our transplant service for the 2006-2007 academic year.
BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL Bryn Mawr Hospital (BMH) is a 283-bed facility located at 130 South Bryn Mawr Avenue in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Associated with the Main Line Health System, Bryn Mawr is a busy regional healthcare site. The Department of Surgery sent its first group of residents to Bryn Mawr in June 2003. The goal of the Bryn Mawr rotation is to provide residents with an opportunity to gain experience at a community facility. These PGY-2s, PGY-3s and PGY-4s residents acquired a wealth of experience facilitated by participating in:
- Inpatient, outpatient and office procedures
- Formal teaching rounds
- Supervised operative procedures
- Formal clinical conferences
The alliance with BMH has proven to be extremely successful and, this academic year, we have three middle-year residents per rotation assigned there. Residents rotating at Bryn Mawr engage in a wealth of supervised surgical procedures, including:
- Inguinal and abdominal hernia repairs
- Laparoscopic cholecystecomies
- Appendectomies
