Overview of the Residency Program

The residency program has been structured to include five years of clinical training and to provide the opportunity to perform basic science research for one to three years with options for advanced degree studies through Drexel University. The first two years of the residency is designed to provide training in pre- and postoperative care, experience in critical care and exposure to the surgical subspecialties. Following this foundation, one to three years of research is encouraged. The last three years of clinical training in general surgery are designed to provide a progressively varied operative experience, to develop increasing independence in clinical judgment with appropriate supervision, and to cultivate leadership qualities that culminate in both clinical and teaching responsibilities in the chief resident year.
