Hahnemann University Hospital

Hahnemann University Hospital serves as a major referral center for heart disease, cancer, trauma and other specialty areas. The 618-bed facility, located in Center City Philadelphia, annually admits over 17,000 inpatients, treats almost 100,000 outpatients and sees more than 27,000 visitors in its Emergency Department.

The hospital’s role as a tertiary care institution is reflected in the large percentage of beds dedicated to intensive care. It offers intensive activity in cardiology, cardiac surgery, heart transplantation, orthopedic surgery, medical and radiation oncology, bone marrow transplantation, liver transplantation, renal dialysis and kidney/pancreas transplantation.

Comprehensive care for a wide range of cancers is also available at Hahnemann, which is approved by the national Marrow Donor Registry to perform matched, unrelated transplants in adults.

  

Other notable features:

  • Site of the first bone marrow transplant and the first kidney transplant in the Greater Philadelphia area.
  • The region's first adult Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center.
  • A comprehensive range of orthopedic services to treat disorders and diseases affecting the bones, muscle and connective tissue, with specialties including the spine and sports medicine.
  • A range of women's services, including leading-edge diagnostic and treatment approaches to everything from gynecology and primary care medicine to gynecologic oncology, high-risk obstetrical services, infertility, genetic counseling services and surgery, and comprehensive, family-centered maternity care and neonatal services.
  • The Heart Hospital – the first cardiac care center of its type in the region, opened in 1993. With over 200 dedicated beds, it offers a complete range of tertiary care services, including diagnostic and therapeutic catheterization, nuclear cardiology, cardiac ultrasound, electrophysiology, cardiac MRI, all cardiothoracic procedures, and heart transplants.

In 2001, the fifth implantation in the world of the AbioCor Implantable Replacement Heart took place at Hahnemann, after five years of research in which Hahnemann’s cardiothoracic surgeons actively participated.

  • The Gerald Ford Neurology Critical Care Unit – a comprehensive, multidisciplinary unit focusing on the critically ill patient who has had a strike, brain tumor, neuromuscular disorders or carotid stents. 
  • The Center for Liver, Biliary and Pancreas Disease- a center developed by some of the region’s leading experts in the diagnosis and treatment of liver disease. The transplant program focuses on procedures of live donor transplantation, the split liver, piggyback and domino transplantation and minimally invasive procedures using laparoscopic technologies.

 

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, located in Northeast Philadelphia, is a 183-bed medical center, which serves as a regional referral hospital for children from the Greater Philadelphia region and from throughout the world. Each year, St. Christopher’s admits more than 11,000 inpatients, treats nearly 45,000 outpatients and sees more than 50,700 visitors in its Emergency Departments.

The Hospital provides a full range of pediatric medical, surgical and subspecialty care. Among its many specialized programs, the hospital includes regional pediatric referral centers for cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery; renal dialysis; cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary disorders; epilepsy; sickle cell anemia; liver, kidney, heart, and heart-lung transplantation; neonatal intensive care; orthopaedic problems and burns.

Other Notable Features:

  • Cystic Fibrosis Center- the largest in the nation
  • Pediatric Transplantation Program- the region’s largest, performing more than 600 heart, liver and kidney transplants since opening in 1971.
  • The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit- caring form more than 300 critically ill and premature infants each year 
  • Burn Center- one of the only sites for children between Boston and Washington D.C.
