The Bondi Award and Fellowship were endowed through a generous gift by Professor Emeritus Amedeo Bondi, Chairman, Department of Microbiology, Hahnemann University (1947-83) and Dean, Graduate School, Hahnemann University (1972-83). Professor Bondi pioneered the major development of the antibiotic disk susceptibility test, which has been the most commonly used test for antibiotic susceptibility for almost 30 years. He discovered the production of penicillinase by bacteria which laid the foundation for the development of penicillance-resistant penicillins. He contributed in a major way to the improvement of vaccines for brucellosis, typhoid and whooping cough. Additionally, Professor Bondi developed a unique model for the study of anti-pseudomonal agents.
