Research Programs

Students are encouraged to participate in research programs in the department. Current areas of research include:

Immunology - B and T cell mechanisms in the immune response to malarial parasites; T cell receptors in allergic encephalitis, multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases; enhancement of the immune response by chemical reagents; B and T cell roles in HIV disease; and changes in the immune response in aging.

Virology - immunologic mechanisms of host resistance to viral infections.

Bacteriology - molecular and cellular pathogenesis and mechanisms of antimicrobial phagocyte processes in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae.

Molecular Biology - molecular studies of malarial parasites and their mitochondria, and of gene expression, metabolism and cell cycle regulation in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Parasitology - molecular and genetic approaches are being applied to the study antimicrobial resistance and metabolism of the parasites Plasmodium, Giardia and Pneumocystis.
